Ipoh is a city in Malaysia with 673,346 inhabitants. It is the capital of the state of Perak and is located in the district of Kinta. Ipoh is located about 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur located on the river Kinta. The valley around Ipoh is rich in tin. About one kilometer east of Ipoh, nested the Kinta valley, lies Gua Tambun, a rocky roof where important Neolithic rock paintings were discovered. Ipoh grew rapidly in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century due to the rich tin deposits in the area. The city was hit hard by the heavy fall of tin prices in the late 1950s. Since then, many people have moved to other parts of Malaysia, especially to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. With a population of 673,346 inhabitants, Ipoh is one of the largest cities in Malaysia.
Nearly 69% of Ipoh's population is ethnic Chinese. Although most of the early settlers who came to Ipoh to work in the tin mines were Hakka, more Chinese now speak in Ipoh Cantonese. High Chinese is also common.
Beautiful colonial buildings are the town hall, the railway station, which is popularly known as "Taj Mahal of Ipoh" by the locals, and the Birch Memorial Clocktower dedicated to the first British governor, JWW Birch, who was killed by local people. The Darul Ridzuan Museum, which depicts the history of the state of Perak vividly, is housed in the imposing dwelling-house of a former tin magnate at Jalan Kuala Kangsar.
Those interested can take part in a three-hour tour, the Ipoh Heritage Trail, which begins every Saturday morning at the station. To other sites are available city maps, on which the route is also listed.
